Travelling in harmony with nature

Sustainable holidays at the Gradonna ****s

Here at the Gradonna ****s Mountain Resort at 1340 m above sea level in Kals am Großglockner, we are very aware that the beautiful scenery and intact nature of the Hohe Tauern National Park where we are situated are our most valuable assets. This is why we follow a sustainable energy concept and sustainable means of construction as well as running our business in a resource-conscious way.

Holidays at our sustainable hotel

The Gradonna is a place where exquisite luxury meets ecological sustainability. It’s not for nothing that the Gradonna****S Mountain Resort won the Green Luxury Award in 2014, with a focus on sustainability and preserving the environment, and the accolade “Europe’s Leading Green Resort 2015”, one of the most coveted international tourism awards.

A short summary of why the Gradonna counts as one of the most sustainable hotels:

  • Wooden construction with low energy standard
All buildings are made of wood, the traditional Alpine construction material:
the facades are covered with wood shingles, whilst the use of pine in the interior furnishing creates an atmosphere of security,
naturalness, and personality. Stone pine was chosen for the bedrooms as it has been proven to create a pleasant atmosphere,
improving the quality of sleep and well-being.
  • Fresh mountain spring water
All buildings, both the 4 star superior Hotel and the luxury chalets, are supplied with water from springs from the Hohe Tauern.
  • Car free holidays and E-mobilityThe luxury resort is car-free thanks to an underground car park. E-cars (We charge € 0.50 per kWh for the energy stored) and e-bikes can be charged free of charge at a charging station. Guests arriving by train can be picked up from Lienz train station in a hybrid car free of charge.
  • Kalser marble
gives the lounge, pools, and spacious spa and wellness area an exclusive, yet at the same time down to earth tone.
  • Hot water & bio heat
The energy needed for hot water and bio heat comes from our own wood pellet boiler (1500 kW bio heat plant). Wood is a renewable energy source and is completely CO2 neutral.
  • Use of the waste heat from cooling facilities
    for heating the swimming pools
  • Local delivery services & companies
and the use of local groceries
  • Car-free holidays
Both in winter and in summer, you don’t need your car during your stay. From our car-free resort in winter you can get onto the piste, the cross-country ski trail, or the winter hiking trails right from the hotel. In summer, the hiking and mountain bike network runs right next to the resort.
  • Local artists as an expression of the region
We support local artists from the region by purchasing and displaying their works in the resort.
  • Resource-saving
in the hotel and table linen, thanks to granite surfaces
  • Amenities
Use of soap dispensers in the hotel rooms’ bathrooms, suites, and chalets; sustainable, refillable, and vegan from the hotel’s own cosmetic series, Magdalena’s made in Tyrol
  • Use of certified sustainable cleaning agents
  • Printable material available as a website download. Also sustainability plays an important part in their production.

Hotel in a natural environment

The wooden construction combines with natural stone and natural materials in the interior, and harmonises with the impressive mountain scenery, creating a unique atmosphere that mirrors nature both outside and in. Large windows bring the mountains right into the room, where you have the impressive scenery directly in view. This is a place where holidays are spent in the midst of nature.

Exquisite front row seat among the sustainable hotels in Austria

As a sustainable wellness hotel, the Gradonna offers a range of treatments. In our cosmetics and applications, we are committed to natural cosmetics from the Tyrolean series Alpienne. Our own, Alpine cosmetic range Magdalena’s made in Tyrol is a vegan cosmetic selection from the Gradonna, combining tried and tested herbal knowledge and recipes with pharmaceutical know-how, creating a unique, high quality product that is both sustainable and regional.

Our commitment to sustainability is also evident in culinary matters. Wild and cultured herbs growing right outside the hotel are used not only in the production of our own care products, but also in our gourmet cuisine. In the hotel restaurant, the kitchen team take care to use the real thing, which means mainly using produce from the region, or Austria. In our own butcher’s, we process venison, reveal, and beef, and kitchen herbs are taken from our own garden or come from the National Park. We consciously forego the use of tablecloths in order to keep energy use and laundry to a minimum.

Regional produce is available for chalet guests to purchase from the delicatessen shop in the resort itself.
